Tryan & Corkill Stay Hot in OKC

When it comes to team roping, the same names consistently remain at the top and it looks like they won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. Of the top three teams at this weeks USTRC open championships, all six ropers consistently qualify for the WNFR, and together hold seven team roping World titles. Brock Hanson weighs in on what sets these guys apart and continually puts them at the top?

“I think so much of it, besides being phenomenal ropers and having great horses, I think it is somebody who rodeos and competes full time. They are so hard to beat because they have that extra competitive edge against someone who doesn’t compete that much,” said Hanson.

Over five head Clay Tyran and Jade Corkill had an average time on 32.39 seconds to take home the Priefert US Open title. Having to be a quick 6 second run from the high call back, they go 5 seconds! To not only win the average but to win the fastest time in the short round as well.

While Kaleb Driggers and Patrick Smith finished second only a hair behind on an average of 33 seconds, Trevor Brazile and Travis Graves placed third.

Breaking down Brock's theory, which he’s discussed many times with other ropers, Hanson explains to someone who doesn’t rope full time going into an event like USTRC Finals there can be nerves and the thought of ‘I have to catch this steer’. Whereas a seasoned full time team roper may see it as just another steer, let’s get the job done; possibly less nerves.

Not only is being "seasoned" an advantage, but keeping the same high standard in partners and consistency plays a big part.  Reverting back to Hanson's emphasis on horse power, at the USTRC it was evident just how crucial a team of good horses comes into play.  When studying Tryan and Corkill, for example, they have may years' experience, great chemistry as team partners and the best horse power; perfect combination to keep them at the top.

Another name that we see a lot, Trevor Brazile, stood out to Hanson on the weekend; especially his heading horse. “His horses scored amazing all week, not just in OKC but in Elk City (where there was another open roping earlier in the week) and I thought they were very impressive in the way they worked. But for him and Travis to win two of the five major ropings this week is pretty impressive.”

Overall, Hanson described the USTRC Finals as a great event for all ropers, fans and families with the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, OK being an exceptional facility. “It was a tough event for sure. The steers themselves were strong so ropers really had to work hard; both the header and heeler.”
